もし英語で「You said you wanted to study Japanese」は日本語で確かに「日本語を勉強したいと言ってました」よね? I am confused with the usage of ている. Using「言う」as example, what is the difference between 「言ました」and「言ってました」? If I want to say: 'You said you wanted to study Japanese' in nihongo, I would normally see this「日本語を勉強したいと言ってました」. Is it wrong to just say 「日本語を勉強したいと言いました」.

hummm, that's a tough question. 言っていました is basically used when the fact he/she said so have some influence to the current situation or action. past: the weather forecast said it'd be rain today. now: going out with an umbrella. past: he said "I'll marry Hanako." now: wonder if that's true or not. 連絡してみたらどうですか? past: Mary said "I want to study Japanese." now: why don't you contact her? On the other hand, 言いました is a simple description of the past. Why did you fight with Takeshi? Because he said "You're fool." to me. Then what did you say, Hiroshi? I said "Someone who says fool is a fool." In conversation, 言っていました is used more often. 言いました is often used in storytelling.
