In the context to which you are probably referring, both "combinations" and "passwords" perform the same function, i.e. to provide security protection. In this regard, "combination" is normally associated with locks (for example, bicycle locks or the locks on safe deposit boxes). Also, combinations tend to be numeric, using digits rather than letters. An example here would be the combination 5-4-4-2. These days, passwords are usually associated with computers and logging into accounts. While some people may use numeric passwords, it is probably the case that most passwords are written either in letters (hence the term "password") or a combination of letters and digits. The are different, but both function to gain access to something. A combination is often used for opening things like lockers, safes and padlocks. For example, a combination of 46-10-5 could open a safe. A password is often used when you call into a call center to verify you are the account holder. It's also used a lot online to access accounts.

Well.... If this makes any sense, a combination is usually number and/or letters combined in a specific order to unlock something etc. While passwords are also numbers/letters, they're usually words but are mostly used (not saying they aren't used for other things) on computers/electronics, giving you access to data and whatnot. Combinations are mostly used (again, not saying they aren't used for other things) for objects (Like, not virtual) such as bikes or lockers etc. Sorry if I am wrong. This is just what I think.

They are not the same thing. However, they have the same function sometimes.
