How do ladies swing in the gardens of Versailles?
Excerpt:
The apartment was on the top floor — a small living-room, a
small dining-room, a small bedroom, and a bath. The living-room was
crowded to the doors with a set of tapestried furniture entirely
too large for it, so that to move about was to stumble continually
over scenes of ladies swinging in the gardens of Versailles.

NoAgenda,
tapestried furniture....furniture covered in a fabric that imitates a tapestry....
ladies swinging in the gardens of Versailles....the design on the tapestried furniture. On the tapestries are pictured ladies in modest long flowing dresses billowing in the wind as they move back and forth on swings hanging from leafy trees in the flowery gardens of Versaille.
The furniture was so large for the room that anywhere you moved you saw the furniture tapestried with the design of ladies swinging in the gardens of Versailles.

This sentence wants to say that the living room was so small and the furniture so large for the room that roaming around the room was very difficult. Imagine a situation in which there are many swings in a garden and ladies are continuously playing on them. Imagine the difficulty if you want to cross those ladies. The same difficulty would be faced by any person who wanted to roam around in the small room of the apartment.

They used to have swings in the garden and women used to gather close to it and swing and chat and play. :-)
