A "gutter ball" is when the bowling ball rolls off of the main strip and into the side gutters without hitting any pins. A spare is when you do not knock down all of the pins with the first roll of the ball. You may only knock down 1. On the second roll of the ball you knock down all of the remaining pins giving yourself a spare or half-strike.

gutter = ball that rolls down the gutter spare = all ten pins with two balls strike = all ten pins with one ball
