both (tidak/bukan) have the same meaning = no/ not. ..but "tidak" is a negation for statement, disallowance, or refusing. example: Statement= Saya tidak suka bunga ini! (I do not like this flower!), Bunga ini tidak harum lagi. (This flower is no longer fragrant.) Refusing= Saya tidak mau! (I don't want!), Maukah kau menikah denganku? Tidak, saya tidak mau. (Do u want to marry me? No. I do not want.) Disallowance= Kamu tidak boleh membuka buku saat ujian! (You can not open a book during the exam!) "bukan" is denial. example: Denial= Itu bukan bukuku! (That's not my book!). Kemarin aku melihat seseorang duduk di depan rumahmu, apakah itu kamu?? Bukan! Itu bukan aku. (Yesterday I saw seomeone sitting in front of your house, was that you?? No! That's not me), Ini bukan salahku! (It's not my fault!) When you deny something, there's always more explanation/ excuse. using conjunction "tetapi/tapi/melainkan/namun" = BUT. ** Itu bukan bukuku! TAPI, BUKUMU. (that's not my book, but yours.) ** Kemarin aku melihat seseorang duduk di depan rumahmu, apakah itu kamu?? Bukan! Itu bukan aku, TAPI KAKAK PEREMPUANKU. (Yesterday I saw someone sitting in front of your house, was that you?? No! That's not me, but my sister) Please check out the following link to see more abt the differences between bukan and tidak: http://bahasakita.com/negation-tidak-bukan-and-belum/

"Tidak" means "No" (in verb sentences), and "Bukan" means "Not" (in noun sentences).

The main thing: BUKAN negates the noun that comes right after it; TIDAK negates everything else. "I am not a Russian person." = "Saya bukan orang Rusia." BECAUSE: the thing being negated is "orang Rusia," and "orang" is a NOUN. "I do not live in Japan." = "Saya tidak tinggal di Jepang." BECAUSE: the thing being negated is "tinggal di Jepang," and "tinggal" is NOT A NOUN.
