Simply "querer" means "want" :) "love" is "amar" , BUT if you use it for talking about a person, it could mean "querer" too. Its very easy , when you refer to a person it's about love, when you refer to an object it is about you wanting it.You can also use "quiero" with animals. "Quiero a mi perro" I love my dog. "Quiero a mi perro" I want my dog. It will depend on the conversation for example if you don' have a dog then you want it.
