I think you have to learn some easy vocabulary in Hiragana and Katakana firstly. Then learn some easy Kanji characters. But study Kanji as vocabulary, don't study it separately. For Example, don't study 日 and 本, but study them as 日本. Having words as examples for each Kanji is useful and easier to remember.

I agree with the upper one. Never separate Kanji and vocabulary. That work as a whole. When you study a new word or expression, memorize Hiragana and Kanji together.
