How to say "on and off" in Japanese?
I'd like to know how to say "on and off" in Japanese - such as in the sentence:
"I've been studying Japanese on and off for three years."
Thank you!

The simple translation would be ときどき and with a bit more difficult word would be 断続的に[[だんぞくてきに].
I would say:
この3年間、ときどき日本語をべんきょうしていました / しています。
この3年間、断続的に日本語をべんきょうしていました / しています。
この3年間、日本語のべんきょうをしたりしなかったり...。(sometimes study but the other times not)
I hope this was helpful.

Ohayou gozaimasu.
I think "danzokutekini (だんぞくてきに 断続的に)" is the word for what you said as "on and off".
But if I need to translate the whole sentence, I'd change the original sentence slightly, like "I started to study Japanese 3 years ago, but I had to stop that sometimes since I was busy."
" Watashi wa sannen mae kara nihongo no benkyou wo shite imasu ga, tokidoki isogashikatta node benkyou simasen deshita. (わたしはさんねんまえからにほんごのべんきょうをしていますが、ときどきいそがしかったのでべんきょうしませんでした。)"
I know that's pretty long ... Gomennasai. :(
Or how about this one? "I've been studying Japanese for 3 years, not in straight."
"Watashi wa nihongo no benkyou wo sannenkan shite imasu, zutto deha arimasen ga." わたしはにほんごのべんきょうをさんねんかんしています、ずっとではありませんが。
:( I admit it's still long ....
I hope someone would give you better answer than the one I wrote ..
