what does" Charlie didn't help things" mean? does it mean that Kyle and Charlie are both troubles.

What "Charlie didn't help things" means is that Charlie didn't do anything that could benefit the situation. Charlie didn't contribute. So, yes, you could in a way say that they are both troublesome because they refuse to aid each other.
