这个饭馆在哪儿 & 这个饭馆在哪里 A Mandarin teaching app I'm using (Memrise) has a test question that translates "where is the restaurant?" as 这个饭馆在哪儿 ? but earlier in the lesson it teaches us that "where" is 在哪里...which would make the sentence: 这个饭馆在哪里? So, is there a difference? Is either correct?Also, a Chinese friend (she is from Sichuan) says she usually uses "餐馆" as restaurant. Is 饭馆 seldom-used, or outdated? Which word do YOU use for "restaurant?"

I studied abroad in Beijing. 这家餐馆 and 这个饭馆 are both acceptable, but 餐馆 is more commonly used outside of Beijing. I use Memrise as well and I'm sure they are teaching you the Beijing accent, which is what explains the 哪里 and 哪儿 differences. Beijingers and other Northern people will ask 你去哪儿 (also you cannot drop the 儿). People outside of Beijing (especially in the South and Taiwan) will use 哪里. I hope that helps!

这个饭馆儿在哪儿? (You might have noticed that i added another 儿 behind 饭馆）这个餐馆儿在哪儿? (Same as above) 这个饭馆在哪里? 这个餐馆在哪里? On the surface of it, there's not much difference between them. If we dig a bit deeper, i think the first two are what i expect to hear in DAILY SPEECH, whereas the last two are more likely to be used in WRITING. I'm splitting hairs again. Being a perfectionist isn’t a good thing:)
