what is the eggplant stand for?
I watched a film named <Love in the Time of Cholera>which is based on the novel of the same name by the last notable novelist Gabriel García Márquez,it tells the story of a love triangle between Fermina Daza and her two suitors,Florention Ariza and Doctor Juvenal Urbion which spans 50 years, from 1880 to 1930.
To be honest I feel sad about Florention pay the unreqiuted love for the heroine until his rival dead.
In the movie,I found that when Fermina agreed to marry Doctor Juvenal Urbion, she didn't want to eat eggplant in her married life. and there is also a scene in this film that her mother-in-law felt anger about her manner of didn't eat eggplant.
So i want to know what is the eggplant stand for?named Love in the Time of Cholera

I don't think eggplant, also called "aubergine" in English and French, "berenjena" in Spanish, has any special symbolic meaning in Colombia. I know it is not commonly found in Mexico. I think it is just a vegetable Fermina doesn't like. It is a pretty odd thing to say.
Here is a Colombian recipe: http://www.mycolombianrecipes.com/eggplant-and-plantain-dip-with-cumin
Do you know what plantains and cumin are?

It looks like it's probably literal, but having not read the book or watched the movie I can't say for sure.
