Daniel
Some basic vocabulary for self-introduction... Hi, I am just beginning with Cantonese and would like to practice some initial introduction sentences. I am a little stuck with some very basic vocabulary which online dictionaries have not solved: How do I say I am a "software engineer" (or "software developer"). Which are this companies/sites named in Cantonese: - Amazon - linked-in There are some questions I would like to understand when asked, and would eventually like to ask myself, but right now I know I wouldn't understand the answers ;-). I haven't found them in dictionaries: - How old are you? - Where are you from? - What do you do for a living? Thanks a lot. Daniel (by the way, what would the recommended way to pronounce my name in Cantonese? I prefer transcriptions in Jyutping, but Yale also works for me)

I am a software engineer 我係軟件工程師 I am a programmer / software developer 我係程式設計師 ( Taiwan Style ) 我係程序員 ( Mainland Style ) 我係programmer / developer( Hong Kong Style ) Amazon 亞馬遜 linkedIn 領英公司 ( Actually we just use the English word directly, it's very strange to say "領英公司" in HK ) How old are you? 你幾歲? Where are you from? 你邊度嚟㗎? What do you do for a living? 你做咩工作㗎? ( What's your job ) 你做咩工作為生㗎? <--this is direct translation, but it sounds strange. In our language, we put less emphasis on "for a living", as it is not polite. English name Daniel is usually translated to 丹尼爾 in Chinese. It's same in Mandarin and Cantonese.
