There is no Chinese name, it's just "chinaSMACK", stylized as so.
掌上中国 suggests the verb of "smacking" (like "slapping"), literally "smacking China in the face". Similarly, some people have interpreted it as "smack talk", which is to speak ill of China.
Both interpetations are because these people think we're always posting negative stuff about China and we're out to malign China or make it look bad.
This isn't true. It's just that negative stuff tends to get more attention and thus command more popularity on the Chinese internet just like the internet everywhere else. People generally talk about negative stuff more than they talk about positive stuff, and our mix of content reflects that.
Another interesting interpretation of our name by a fan was that "SMACK" refers to the drug, and that it represented our website about China being "addictive". That was rather amusing and flattering but again, also not the origin of our name.
The origin of our name is pretty mundane. SMACK made the name more memorable and it happened to be available to register (wasn't already registered by someone else), so that's what it ended up being. We continued the theme/motif for our sister sites (koreaBANG, japanCRUSH).
There's no real symbolic meaning behind "SMACK" (or "BANG" or "CRUSH"). It's just a sound. The furthest we've entertained a meaning is that the sound represents how one might feel when beholding popular, viral, trending Chinese internet content and netizen comments in their raw and unsanitized form (except translated into English), without it being editorialized or censored.
Finally, we're actually based in Shanghai. It's just that our domain registrar is based in California.
