What is the difference between " before" and " prior to"?

Actually, there isn't a clear difference. The only difference is that 'before' is used commonly and 'prior to' in legal documents and formal texts but they are sometimes interchangeable when 'before' means 'earlier in time'.

There is not much difference. "Before" is more common.
