They are sometimes used as synonyms, but there is a difference. 'Faith' is a personal belief. It is internal to each individual. 'Religion' is organised and cultural. Islam and Christianity are religions. All religions involve faith, but not all faiths involve religion.

Religion can be understood as a group activity associated with the Divine. It can involve prayer, meditation, discussions, lectures, doctrines and moral instructions in the context of Morality, Literalisms, Allegories and Typology and some of the well known texts such as The Bhagavad Gita, Dhammapada, Diamond Sutra, Holy Bible, Koran and so forth. When it comes to a definition of faith, you can seek out a dictionary, but I prefer the definition offered by the Apostle Paul: "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."----------Hebrews 11:1 from the - King James Bible "Authorized Version", Cambridge Edition Basically, to learn of these things as a whole conception of "religion" you may want to get an authoritative text on the subject of the world's religions, which would be something like this. http://www.amazon.com/Worlds-Religions-Plus-Huston-Smith/dp/0061660183/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1429017534&sr=1-1&keywords=the+world%27s+religions which is: The World's Religions by Huston Smith Of course, you can find good basic information on Wikipedia also
