What does if he didn’t “make it.” mean? Brad graduated and moved out to LA with no backup plan in place if he didn’t “make it.” Jason took a corporate 9-to-5 job and worked his comedy craft evenings and weekends. What does if he didn’t “make it.” mean? I sure know what make it means. make it is succeed. but I don't know what it means in the context.

It sounds like you already know the answer to your own question. To be a bit more specific, though, I would assume that "making it" in this case refers to being able to pay his bills using only the money he earned from doing comedy and therefore being able to continue doing comedy as long as he wants. The contrast between Jason and Brad is the clearest indication of this. Jason decided to obtain a more traditional job to pay his bills.
