We call them mostly great because they did something revolutionary. So back then when they lived what they did was a new thing and the vast majority of people don't like unknown and new things. A new thing could have many short-therm and long-term effects, therefore it takes time to understand all of it. So yes. It is like a mutation:) Maybe it is strange but it could be beneficial.
