What are misericords? I translate a book guide from Westminster Abbey. It has a lot of archaic words. How do you think in this sentance: "The undersides of the seats have carved decorations called misericords ( from the Latin word for 'mercy')." misericords mean seats for monks or decoration of seats? Thank you very much.I think, there are seats. Am I right? The next sentance: They gave some support to the monks when they stood during long services, and even though the misericords were generally hidden from view, the carvings are very elaborate.

I hope are now convinced that the writer of the guide to Westminster Abbey is not 'ignorant', and does not write 'wrong sentences' with 'grammatical mistakes' in them. As to 'misericord', the word 'seat' is a lazy translation that is not helpful at all. Misericords are shelves on the underside of folding seats, visible when the seat is in an upright position. When the monks were standing for long periods at prayer, they could rest their behinds on these shelves to give themselves a bit of support and comfort. Over the years misericords also became a decorative feature. Do as Peachey suggests and stop relying just on a Russian dictionary. It is obviously misleading you. A translator should have more tools at their disposal than a bilingual dictionary. Use decent English-English dictionaries, together with the wealth of information available on the internet. Why use a Russian dictionary? :) Check again with an English-only dictionary. Look at definition 2 in the link below. It was something to lean against. http://www.thefreedictionary.com/misericord You can also do an image search, or check Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Misericord

It's talking about seats which the Monks sat on. Underneath the seat there are carvings which cannot be seen (because they are on the underside). These carvings are called misrecords. So that is the name of the decorations.
