"Insgesamt macht das etwa eine Stunde."
Darf ich hier auch 'etwas' benutzen? Was ist der Unterschied?

etwa = circa; approximately
(mind you, "etwa" also serves as a modal particle, e.g. "Hast Du etwa die Tür offen gelassen?" = "You didn't leave the door open, did you?")
etwas = something

Sie dürfen hier "etwas" nicht benutzen, weil "etwas" eine andere Bedeutung hat:
1) etwas Salz? some salt?
2) etwas Nettes something nice
3) etwas Schöneres habe ich noch nie gesehen I have never seen anything more beautiful
