Despite the two are right in grammar sense, the second one is the right one to express that idea. The first sentence is in "past perfect tense", which is used to talk of actions/situations that happened even before to the past events. You could say for example (telling a story): I looked at her, and a thought came to my mind, I "had seen" her before. In your case, all is in the same time period, so "past simple tense" applies perfectly. Good luck!
