Cause can be both a noun and a verb. When it is a noun the meaning of 'the cause,' is very similar to 'the reason.' 'The cause of the train crash was bad weather.' Why did the train crash? 'The reason was bad weather.' 'To cause,' is a verb. It indicates that somebody or something made something happen. 'The driver caused the train to crash by missing the red signal.' 'To reason,' is also a verb but its meaning is completely different to 'to cause.' To reason means to work out or to theorize. 'The crash investigator reasoned that the crash was probably caused by bad weather.'
