La mayoría del tiempo no hay una diferencia. 'Talk' generalmente es mejor para describir una conversacion en curso, mientras 'speak' generalmente es mejor para describir discursos públicos. Pero no preocupa por elegir el verbo correcto, porque ambos son bien. Excusa mi español, por favor. Estoy practicando también. :)

They mean the same thing and we use them the same way. For example: "I need to talk to my brother" or "I must speak to my brother" We can also form nouns from these verbs. The noun form of the verb to talk is just talk ("He gave a talk yesterday." The noun form of the verb to speak is "speech." "He gave a speech yesterday." These two nouns arguably differ slightly in meaning.. a talk is considered to be informative (it provides information) whereas a speech might consist of nothing more than thanking somebody for something.

Ya que tu idioma natal es el español, la mejor manera de diferenciar ambos para evitar su mal uso en el 90% de las ocasiones, sería recordando la sutil mas evidente diferencia entre sus significados. “Talk” connota más comunicar o intercambiar (Ideas, pensamientos, información, etc.) a través del habla. “Speak” sugiere más bien pronunciar o articular sonidos vocalmente. Así mismo, es importante recordar que existen “collocations” (Frases fijas) y/o expresiones idiomáticas que son únicas y donde ambas no pueden ser utilizadas indistintamente. e.g. “Talk one’s head off” (Hablar demasiado o hasta por los codos) vs “speak your mind” (Decir lo que piensas). En estos ejemplos no podras utilizar una y otra indistintamente. Finalmente, no olvides que además de estas dos palabras también existen los verbos “Say” y “Tell”.
