What is the difference between chips and crisps?

Hi there
It is the same thing or type of food. In South Africa where I live, we use the word chips. In England they will use the word crisps. This is a packet of chips or packet of crisps. Hope this helps.

Also to add - in the US "crisps" isn't a common term. People will understand you, but most Americans won't use "crisps" or they'll use it to mean something that isn't quite a chip.

Just to add to Scott's answer - here in the UK, chips mean fries. Although, we often use "french fries" for thin chips, and "chips" for fatter chips (for example, the chips you get in fish and chip shops).
