Can someone explain me the difference between "into" and "onto"?

“Into” usually means to enter or to become enclosed by. Examples: He walked into the store. She put the ring in the box. “Onto” usually means on to the top of something. Examples: She put the book onto the table. He built a second floor onto his house.

It is also possible to use 'into' with 'agreement' "They entered into an agreement to share the costs between them"
