''denn je'' vs. ''als je zuvor'' In my preparation book for ÖSD exam I got a title that says: ''Mehr Neuinfizierte als je zuvor''. In my notebook entry, I wrote: ''Heutzutage brauchen Kinder Haustiere mehr als je zuvor'', and I was surprised when I got corrected: ''Heutzutage brauchen Kinder Haustiere mehr denn je''. Please, could someone explain the difference between the two and how to use them properly?

I actually don't see any difference between the two and would probably be more inclined to use mehr als je zuvor in that case, although it does sound like you're basing yourself on some kind of statistic.

"Denn" im Sinne von "als" ist etwas veraltetes Deutsch und bis auf wenige feste Phrasen (wie z.B. die von Dir zitierte) aus dem modernen Standarddeutsch verschwunden. Ich bin der Meinung, dass beide Phrasen synonym verwendet werden koennen.

In my opinion, "mehr als je zuvor" seems to be looking at obtainable information that is recorded somewhere, as with the number of infected people. There is no statistic on how much kids needed animals in past years, so a more general "denn je" is used. I hope I am right. One of the experts can correct me if I am wrong.
