firstly,about  the  meaning of  the sentence ,you are right , in this sentnce ,张 is   just  a word, because in chinese you will find that our words have their different structure;  no matter what meaning of it ,its stroke wont be changed ,right ?
then ,because of difference means ,you cant understand it .张,if as a verb, maening "to open",you are right ,such as "张嘴” ；besides, when it as a noun ,it can be regard "a family name （张飞）" \ a "piece", such as 一张纸、一张桌子。
