"We checked our critical weapons at the door." The topic sentence comes from the following context. "Amos was always very funny, and in his presence I became funny as well, so we spent hours of solid work in continuous amusement. The pleasure we found in working together made us exceptionally patient; it is much easier to strive for perfection when you are never bored. Perhaps most important, we checked our critical weapons at the door. Both Amos and I were critical and argumentative, he even more than I,..." Can anyone help explain the meaning of "weapons at the door" here? Thank you.

At some restaurants or clubs you can "check" your coat, hat, umbrella just inside the door where someone will store them for you and give you a "claim check" (receipt) so you can pick them up when you leave. This is sometimes used in a humorous way in phrases like "check your ego at the door" or "check your attitude at the door", meaning leave it behind. There's probably situations where where military or police would "surrender" their weapons before entering some place, for security reasons, but I'm not too familiar with that. I think I happened to read this same book, by Kahneman.

It normally means that you leave weapons with teh man at the door: that is you do not have them available while inside, the club, the ... whereverer. . Here the analogue is presumably that they also had nothing too terrible: While working they said nothing that would be truely offensive or hurtful to the other.
