Biggest Problem in Learning Chinese After attempting to learn Chinese for a while now, I've discovered one of the largest impediments to learning and using the language. It seems like almost everything is called Zhege (这个) . . . When I go to the market I point to the produce and say . . . wo yao Zhege (我要这个) In restaurants, every dish on the menu seems to be called the same . . . I point to the dish I want and call it by it's name . . . Zhege (这个) I could go on and on. Why is everything called Zhege (这个)??? Couldn't they think of at least a few other names for things? Just asking.

I guess 这个 (zhe ge) has become a popular "order" term among many chinese restaurant : 我要这个(I wan't this one) or 这个有吗?(do you have this one?). It's basically pointing out their choices in the menu book. Unlike other country (especially the western), they would likely order the 'name' of the food rather than pointing at it in the menu book/board : "I'd like to have a grilled hotdog and an apple pie" - rather than saying "I want this/that one." don't be bothered by this phrase "这个", it isn't a big problem in understanding it. :)

Isn't it very convenient to use '这个' for everything? :) However like the rest said, 这个 means 'this', but not necessary the true and accurate one to match with any objects. 这所房子 (this house) specifically used for buildings 这片地 (this 'piece of' land/field) used for 'piece' objects, eg leaf 这片叶子, but we don't use it to describe piece of paper. 这只羊 (this sheep) animals are usually "只". horse is different, 这匹马. 这条鱼 (this fish) fishes are described as '条', as they are long animals. 这条绳子 (this rope) long objects are also '条' 这台/这架 for electrical appliances. (tv 这台电视机, computer 这台电脑, camera 这架照相机) 这张 for furnitures. (sofa 这张沙发, table 这张桌子,chair 这张椅子) piece of paper is also 张,一张纸。 这扇 for door, 这扇门 这门 for knowledge. 这门学问,这门知识 这粒 for round/small objects. 这粒豆 这艘 for ships. 这艘船,这艘快艇 Many different ones to learn, so hope you won't get bored with '这个’ anymore ^^

zhe ge just mean 'this'. 'ge' is very common to be use. you can say '这个女人'. '这个地方','这个问题'. '这女人', '这地方', '这问题', without 'ge', have the same meaning. but not everything use 'ge' , use 'tiao' for fish or boat. use 'zhi' for song. if you say '这个船','这个歌'. we can understand, but it's so wired.
