To search for something is to look for it, to try to find it, as in: I'm searching for my keys; I don't know where I left them. The police searched for the weapon the murderer had used.
To search something is to look carefully within it: I'm searching my bedroom; I think my keys are somewhere in that room. The police searched the house, looking for the murder weapon.
