An important clue is any sound from the first language that doesn't exist in English. The Russian R is not English-like, so speaking English with a Russian R is immediately noticeable. Other languages have similar clues. Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, French, Spanish, German, Polish, Russian accents are easily distinguished after ten words.

I can usually tell although sometimes confuse with Ukrainian or Polish. Russian sounds like English run backwards on reel to reel tape!
