When to use znać vs. wiedzieć? I have been learning polish for a bit now but still mess these two up. I know I am understood, but would just like to be more proper!

Witaj Giancarlo, Yes it can be tricky sometimes to use those words in the right moment. "znać" will always answer the questions "kogo?" or "co?" and will concern nouns: znam twoją mamę, znam jego imię, znam karate, I try to explain it with using an extra word "poznać" - get to know. So first you get to know someone/something and then you know. Poznałem twoją mamę więc ją znam. poznałem jego imię więc je znam. Poznałem karate więc znam karate. "wiem" is mostly conected with the rest of the sentence, kind of "wiem o czymś" - I know about... wiem co chcesz powiedzieć, wiem o tym, wiem gdzie mieszkasz, wiem jak masz na imię Refering to those sentences with "znam" I would have to change them into: Wiem kim jest twoja mama, wiem jak on ma na imię, wiem co to jest karate In all of those cases the information that you send is that you know about it but not necessarily you know them/it personally. I hope it helps a bit, Pozdrawiam

Znać is more like 'to be acquainted with' while wiedzieć is rather 'to have knowledge about sth'. Just like 'kennen' and 'weissen' in German. For instance: Wiesz, co się wydarzyło? (Do u know what happened?) Znam wszystkich moich sąsiadów! (I know all of my neighbours! = I am acquainted with all my neighbours!) Sometimes these two could be really easily messed up, for example u can say 'Znam pięć języków obcych!' (I know five foreign languages!), but NOT 'Wiem pięć języków obych!' U just need a little bit more experience in Polish to easily distinguish these two :)
