when something is funny, someone will type lol implying that they are laughing

It doesn't matter what you might imply mentally in that abbreviation. It can be "Laughing Out Loud", "Lots Of Laughs" or even "Loser On Line".
Anyway, it means a laughing at somebody and most messengers can transform that acronym to a picture of a laughing geek. ;)
