The true pelmeni are made with meat and they are salted.
Usually russain people eat them with mayonnaise, tomato sauce or sour cream.
There is similar dish called "varenyky". Varenyky can be made with potatoes, cheese, cherry, mushrooms etc...

Hi, I make pelmeni myself, using Chinese gow-gee wrappers for the dough as they are very thin. In Lithuanian we call them koldunai. They are similar to Italian ravioli and Chinese dumplings.

The taste is great! They are usually made with meat. (Natural meat, I would add. ;-) ) I don't think that they are sweet. I like them with butter and bay leaves - together with some broth left!

It depends on the maker of the pelmeni. They can also have different fillings, cheese, meat or potatoes. Some people like to eat them with sour cream. I ate them regularly for a year and I have to say that I got tired of them.
