Here's the definition on the internet (http://diccionario.sensagent.com/tampoco/es-es/) but it's all in Spanish so I'm not sure how much help it'll be, but I took the examples from there, too.
Okay, so what I gathered is that "tampoco" is used to deny something or express negativity once something has already been denied. For example:
Alicia: ¿Has visto esa nueva película?
Sandra: No.
Alicia: Bueno, ¿y has visto el nuevo programa en la televisión?
Sandra: Tampoco!
So Alicia asks Sandra if she's seen the new movie, and Sandra says no. So she's denied watching the movie, and then Alicia asks if she's seen the new television show and Sandra hasn't so she uses "tampoco" to express that she hasn't seen the new television show ~either~.
"Tampoco" = neither.
Alicia: El niño no durmió y tampoco su madre.
TRANSLATION: The boy didn't sleep and ~neither~ did his mother.
Sandra: No conozco a tus padres y tampoco a tus hermanos.
TRANSLATION: I don't know your parents or your brothers.
Alicia: No fueron a la plaza temprano y tampoco más tarde.
TRANS: They didn't go to the store earlier or later.
Sandra: No desayunaron hoy y tampoco ayer.
TRANS: They didn't have breakfast today or yesterday.
So basically, you use "tampoco" in a sentence when you are denying related things consecutively.
"No, they didn't have breakfast today" AND "No, they didn't have breakfast yesterday." = "No, they didn't have breakfast today or yesterday".
"No desayunaron hoy" + "No desayunaron ayer" = "No desayunaron hoy y tampoco ayer".
I hope this made SOME sense! :)
