Lo que sucede es que tus libros te están enseñando español de España. Algo similar ocurre en México, usualmente se enseña inglés Americano así que para los principiantes puede resultar difícil comprender el inglés británico. Just like the British say 'nappy' instead of the American word 'diaper', the British write 'colour' and the American write 'color', Spanish people say 'guisantes' and Mexican people say 'chicharos', Spanish people write 'Méjico' and Mexican people write 'México'. Only with time and practise you will get used to the vocabulary differences within Spanish of some region and another.

Hola ying~ Ademas de las distintas formas de nombrar objetos,la entonación y la velocidad para hablar entre los distintos pueblos latinoamericanos cambia.Incluso dentro del mismo pais.En chile ocurre que mientras mas al sur ,mas rapido se habla.Y ademas nombramos las cosas de forma distinta. Porque quizá lo hablamos más rápido, lo mismo pasa con el inglés británico y el estadounidense, chatea con latinos, aunque igual hay distintos acentos.

You could also try listening to latinamerican singers' music, that way you could search for the lyrics and see how words are pronounced by non-Spanish people. I think Mexican accent is one of the most understandable ones and it should be easy for you to understand it. Most non-Spanish speaking movies are Spanish dubbed here in Mexico and distributed to all/most Latin America, that is because Mexican accent is clear and people from other countries can understand it. Some mexican singers are: Paulina Rubio, Thalia, José José, Juan Gabriel, Alejandra Guzmán, Julieta Venegas, Luis Miguel, Ely Guerra, Christian Castro...
