Truth is, a lot of collegers are still alive and doing pretty good without a summer job.

Most students have to pay back loans they have taken out to study at college. so they need a summer job. If their parents are rich, then it doesn't matter, does it? Recently when I was in China I spoke to my guides who were linguistic majors. They were doing guided tours in order to pay for their courses.

Unless they want to go to summer school they will have more time to work and therefore get more hours and more money. I do not think college students generally get a job simply to keep them busy. I do not know any college students who want a job simply to keep them busy.
