I've read a couple of news about "legalizing cannabis" in US lately. Some use "cannabis",some use "marijuana" or "hemp". Pls let me know which expression is more common?

Cannabis" and "marijuana" are the most commonly used terms, but they can have slightly different connotations: 1. Cannabis: This is the more formal, scientific term and is often used in legal and medical contexts. It's increasingly common in discussions about legalization and regulation. 2. Marijuana: This term is widely used in everyday language and is often associated with the recreational use of the plant. 3. Hemp: Refers specifically to varieties of the cannabis plant that are grown for industrial purposes (like textiles, paper, and CBD products) and contain very low levels of THC (the psychoactive compound). In the context of legalization, "cannabis" is becoming more common, especially in formal discussions, but "marijuana" is still widely used in everyday conversation.

"Hemp" is more common when talking about clothing, construction materials and any other physical use focused of its fibres. Cannabis is the more common term used by government in the UK and most of the English speaking world. In the USA it seems to be a 50/50 mix of Marijuana and Cannabis by the government there. Some people believe Marijuana is a word invented by USA government, designed to be scary. On the streets, nicknames are more common. Weed is the most common nickname for it in the UK. Other nicknames used around the world include dope, grass, bud, pot, hash, mary jane, etc.
