Professor Profissionalš āI know the word, but I just canāt use it!ā š
I hear this ALL THE TIMEāespecially from intermediate and upper-intermediate learners.
Itās frustrating, right? You recognise the word when you read or hear it, but when itās your turn to speak⦠nothing.
So, what can you do?
Hereās a tip I always share:
š Use the word in your writing and speaking. Donāt just memorise itālive with it.
For example, if youāve just learned the word āstiflingā (meaning hot, uncomfortable, hard to breathe), try journaling about a summer holiday where the weather was stifling.
Or pretend youāre talking to a friend:
āThe heat in Bangkok was absolutely stiflingāI couldnāt even breathe!ā
Thatās how you make the word yours.
Iām GraceāCambridge-certified, with 7+ years of experience working in top bank and educational charity in the UK. I specialise in Business and Conversational English.
If this sounds like something you struggle with, message me or book a lesson on italki. Letās work on it together.
