Hi there!
I came across this phrase in the dictionary
and have read as many definitions as I could but the examples the dictionaries provide doesn't still make sense to me.
That will teach you (to do something)
For example: that will teach you to be late.
to me it made sense if it was ; that will teach you not to be late.
I understand it's a fixed phrase, but I really need help in understanding it. Is it sarcastic or ironical ?
I appreciate your help :-)

Yes it means teach someone not to be late. Suppose there was something very tasty for dinner and you'r late and the good, tasty things are all gone. Or your late to meet your friends to go for a trip or out someone. They don't wait for you since you do this to them all the time. Maybe they want to teach you a lesson.
