In French, the passé composé and the imparfait are two of the most commonly used past tenses.
The passé composé is used to describe a completed action or a series of completed actions in the past. It is formed with the auxiliary verb "avoir" or "être" in the present tense and the past participle of the main verb.
For example: "J'ai mangé une pomme" (I ate an apple).
The imparfait, on the other hand, is used to describe an ongoing or repeated action in the past. It is formed with the stem of the present tense of the verb and adding the endings "-ais", "-ais", "-ait", "-ions", "-iez" or "-aient" depending on the subject pronoun.
For example: "Je mangeais une pomme" (I was eating an apple).
In summary, the passé composé is used to describe completed actions, while the imparfait is used to describe ongoing or repeated actions in the past.
