How long has it taken you to learn English (or any language)?

I'm sure all of you have seen some YouTube video or ad saying something like, "Learn ANY language in 1 month!" Of course this is impossible but I'm wondering what your current level is (in any language) and how long it has taken you to get there?

It's taken me 3.5 years to get to a high level of Spanish.

Sugerencias para un articulo

Hola Amigos,

Best news from your country in 2018 Every time I watch or read the news it's always about something horrific or depressing. It's not often that we see some good news. For that reason, I want to know some good news from your country in 2018?

Am I "Fluent"?

I've been speaking Spanish for a little over 3 years now. I've taken 100+ hours of lessons on italki with teachers from Spain and most countries in Central & South America. I've spoken with taxi drivers in Cuba, food vendors in Peru, strangers in Chile & Argentina, all with varying levels of "fluency." With some people I'm able to discuss my favorite books,  political views,  just about anything. I've recently returned to the Caribbean coast of Colombia to visit some friends for the holidays and I can hardly understand anyone! I've had to ask people on several occasions to repeat basic sentences. Naturally, I have been asking myself a lot of questions.

I know there's no definitive answer to this question, but has something like this happened to you before? Which accent in the language you're learning is the easiest/most difficult for you to understand? Must someone understand many or all accents before being considered "fluent"? Or, is it enough to be able to speak "fluently" within one region?

Have you ever experienced culture shock?
Around 2 years ago, I visited Colombia for the first time. I had always heard that Colombians were notorious for being late and showing up at any given time, for better or for worse. Not only did I find this to be true but it was very frustrating for me the first few months. As an American, if someone is more than 15 or 20 minutes late we tend to think something happened, maybe that person has blown us off or they forgot, and we might send a text or try to call the other person. Colombians would not even blink an eye at this! Many people often showed up an hour or even an hour and a half "late" and walked in like nothing even happened! This was amazing to me. My silly one track American mind wondered how anything happened? How did anyone make plans? After awhile, I fell in love with their fluid perception of time and how they all seemed to live in the moment. If something happened, it happened. If not, it's okay, it could wait for tomorrow or next year or maybe never. Today, I think I've taken the best from both worlds. I still like to be on time but this has definitely changed my view of "time."

Have you ever experienced culture shock? How did it effect/change you?

5 cities in Central/South America I just arrived back in Colombia after a 2 year absence! Earlier this year, I went to the Yucatan and around Cuba. I'm planning to see a few cities here in CO and then start a trip around SouthAmerica. This got me thinking... if you've travelled extensively around SouthAmerica which were your 5 favorite cities? If you've never been, which 5 cities would you most like to visit? And why?
