I was born and raised in Canada with Japanese and Chinese heritage. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Linguistics and I’m currently in Türkiye completing my Master’s in Gastronomy and Culinary Arts. I’m proficient in English and Japanese, speak some Mandarin, and have studied Turkish for 8+ years. I love learning languages and have explored Arabic, Korean, Ukrainian, Hebrew, Bengali, Persian, and Kinyarwanda. Hugh is great at conveying an understanding of Japanese, teaching how something is said and why it is structured that way. His focus on grammar and sentence structure has enabled me to learn phrases and also to construct my own. I look forward to continuing my lessons with him.

Hugh is a lovely teacher who is extremely easy to talk to. The lessons are very enjoyable, whether it is conversing in Japanese, or translating sentences. Hugh is a very supportive, patient and personable sensei. I have taken a few lessons with him now. I find it especially helpful that he is both a native Japanese and English speaker. He is able to explain things to me in everyday plain English. I enjoy our classes very much and have been learning a lot from him.
