British/ UK terms for everyday items and concepts that are different from the USA or other varieties of English :)

Everyday British English

To send a letter or parcel/ The service that sends and delivers letters and parcels
Ex. "My parcel got lost in the post"
(US English: To Mail / The Mail)

Paper money, Ex. "A £5 note"
(US English: Bill, Ex. A $5 bill)

Light rain 
Ex. "Is it raining a lot?" "Not really, it's just spitting"
(US English: Sprinkling)

Path for pedestrians, usually at the side of a road
Ex. "The pavement was so narrow I had to walk in the road"
(US English: Sidewalk)

A trip/ Travel taken for leisure reasons, sometimes abroad.
Ex. "They're going on holiday to Jamaica next month"
(US English: Vacation)

Large vehicle usually used to transport goods
(US English: Truck)

The space at the very back of a car
Ex. "Is there enough room in the boot for another suitcase?"
(US English: Trunk)

The very front of a car
(US English: Hood)

"." - the punctuation mark used to end a sentence
(US English: period)

Plate with a sequence of letters and numbers displayed on the front of a vehicle
(US English: License Plate)

Underground trains, typical in big cities (tube used especially in reference to London)
Ex. "He's getting the tube to Euston, so we'll meet him at the station"
(US English: Subway)

Automated telephone-answering machine where you can leave a message (voicemail commonly used)
Ex. "She wasn't home so it went to answerphone" 
(US: Answering Machine)

A pickled cucumber
(US English: A pickle)

(Usually) red and black flying insect with spots
(US English: Ladybug)

Combination of letters and numbers used in addresses
Ex. "Can you tell me your postcode so I can send a card?"
(US English: ZIP Code)

Sweet course eaten after lunch/ dinner etc.
(US English, also used in UK English: Dessert)

To skip school or work (most commonly school)
Ex. "Have you seen Lily?" "No, maybe she's skiving"

Food preserved in a tin/ in a can
Ex. Tinned tuna, tinned tomatoes
(Alternatively: Canned)

Container for waste
(Alternatives: Garbage can (US), Dustbin (UK))

Metal cart with wheels used in supermarkets/ grocery stores
(US: Shopping cart)

A type of spider with long, thin legs. Sometimes also a crane fly.

Elevator
Ex. "My legs are tired and it's 4 floors up, let's take the lift"

Apartment
Ex. "We're looking for a 2-bed flat in Manchester"

Wearing a funny or themed costume (to an event or party)
Ex. "The party is fancy dress. I'm thinking of going as a pirate"
(In the US it refers to formal dress, but not in the UK)

Article of clothing worn on the legs
(US English: Pants)
