to think carefully about something for a long time

to do difficult work for a long time

to want something very much, especially something that someone else has

pleasant and friendly

"We found much that is congenial to our way of thinking in these three commentaries."

rude and offensive

"a crude comment/remark"

very bad or morally wrong

"Your son's behaviour is absolutely deplorable."

to burn something or someone with very hot liquid or steam

"She scalded her mouth on the hot soup."

to make a serious mistake

"This tactical blunder cost him his popularity and materially assisted the secret operations of the king."

disagreement between people

"They feared that it might open up the possibility for more discord."

to weigh someone or something down, or to make it difficult for someone to do something

"Today, thankfully, women tennis players are not encumbered with long, heavy skirts and high-necked blouses."

able to work as intended or able to succeed

"In order to make the company viable, it will unfortunately be necessary to reduce staffing levels."

to say officially that an agreement, permission, a law, etc. is no longer in effect

"The authorities have revoked their original decision to allow development of this rural area."

unwilling to speak about your thoughts or feelings:

"He is very reticent about his past."

If two or more activities, subjects, or periods of time overlap, they have some parts that are the same

an action that is slightly bad or breaks a rule but is not a crime (is rather MEAN than criminal)

"As children, we were beaten for some minor misdemeanour."

to encourage an activity or development or make it happen faster

a signal for someone to do something
(has a bit milder meaning than spur)

feeling worried about something that you are going to do or that is going to happen

affraid, worried, anxious + about something
