My name is Joel Alves, and I am a Portuguese language teacher from Portugal. I hold a Master's Degree in Portuguese as a Foreign Language, and I have been working as a Portuguese language teacher since 2013. From October 2013 to June 2016 I worked in Serbia, where I taught Portuguese at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Novi Sad and at the Faculty of Philology and Arts of the University of Kragujevac. From January 2018 to July 2022 I worked at the University of Oviedo, in Spain, and over the past years I have also given several intensive Summer courses both in Portugal and in Germany.Me as a Teacher
I'm a certified Portuguese language teacher with 10 years of Portuguese teaching experience. I really like teaching my mother tongue to people from all over the world, so if you wish to learn European Portuguese you can count on me to help you learn it.My lessons & teaching style
Before you decide to book a trial lesson with me, please contact me and tell me the reason why you want to learn Portuguese and also what your level of Portuguese is (beginner, elementary, intermediate or advanced). I usually accept students regardless of their level, but at times, if my schedule is very tight, I tend to give priority to intermediate and advanced students.
As for the CAPLE Exam Preparation Courses, please keep in mind that I don't help students prepare for DAPLE and DUPLE, as I don't have enough material and resources for those specific levels. But if you are planning to prepare for CIPLE, DEPLE or DIPLE, I will be glad to help you out.My teaching material

I highly recommend Joel as a Portuguese teacher. He has excellent command of the language and deep understanding of linguistics and grammar.
Joel teaches in a very clear, methodical way, explaining concepts and vocabulary simply and comprehensibly. He excels at breaking down complex linguistic ideas into smaller, graspable pieces. Even tricky topics become clear under his instruction.

Joel is a fantastic teacher. He is very professional, engaging and always had a plan for our classes. He helped me prepare for the CIPLE exam over about a month, using sample test prompts for reading, writing, speaking and listening comprehension. Writing is my biggest weakness (he quickly identified that) and he very patiently went through my efforts, correcting each error and explaining why I got it wrong. I then re-wrote it (and re-wrote it again) until it was error-free. He focused not just on grammatical accuracy but also on tone and context. I really enjoyed working with Joel and always looked forward to classes with him. I highly recommend him as teacher!

Gosto muito das aulas do Joel. Sou um aluno muito exigente, porque também sou professor de espanhol. O Joel é um linguista, por isso pode explicar bem como funciona a língua. As aulas são sempre interessantes, acho que melhorei bastante o meu nível do português. Outro aspeto a destacar que para mim é muito relevante, o Joel sabe ensinar os hispanofalantes, porque conhece as dificuldades que pode ter um hispanofalante que estuda português.
