Spanish lessons for English?

I'm researching Spanish grammar, and one thing I'm interested in is what you think about polite speech in Spanish. What is the first thing that comes to mind when you need to speak politely? It seems the polite form of English just uses more difficult and elitist words so one seems smarter. American English, at least.
