Hello dear students! Today I would like to pay attention to such a topic as congratulations in Russian. Every culture has its own etiquette of congratulations; there are clichƩ phrases suitable for any occasion, and more specific wishes applied to specific people and on a specific occasion. It is important to be familiar with this etiquette, because if a language mistake is easily forgiven by native speakers, then a cultural mistake is unlikely. Today we will analyze such topics as birthday congratulations, happy new year and Merry Christmas in Russian, and many more.

Construction Congratulate - "ŠŸŠ¾Š·Š“Ń€Š°Š²Š»ŃŃŽ" + Accusative case + preposition "с" + Instrumental case

• ŠŸŠ¾Š·Š“Ń€Š°Š²Š»ŃŃŽ + Ń‚ŠµŠ±Ń (кого? Š’ŠøŠ½ŠøŃ‚ŠµŠ»ŃŒŠ½Ń‹Š¹ паГеж) + с + празГником (с чем? Š¢Š²Š¾Ń€ŠøŃ‚ŠµŠ»ŃŒŠ½Ń‹Š¹ паГеж)

• ŠŸŠ¾Š·Š“Ń€Š°Š²Š»ŃŃŽ + ŠŠ»ŠµŠŗсŠµŃ (кого? Š’ŠøŠ½ŠøŃ‚ŠµŠ»ŃŒŠ½Ń‹Š¹ паГеж) + с + ŃŽŠ±ŠøŠ»ŠµŠµŠ¼

• ŠŸŠ¾Š·Š“Ń€Š°Š²Š»ŃŃŽ Вас (кого? Š’ŠøŠ½ŠøŃ‚ŠµŠ»ŃŒŠ½Ń‹Š¹ паГеж) + с + рожГением сына

To give your congratulations even better sound and sincerity, we can add the phrase to this construction:

ŠžŃ‚ всей Гуши - From all my heart

ŠžŃ‚ всего серГца – from all my heart

ŠžŃ‚ чистого серГца [At chistava sertsa] Sincerely ( Russian idiom which doesn’t have a direct translation)

Thus, we get:

ŠžŃ‚ чистого серГца + ŠæŠ¾Š·Š“Ń€Š°Š²Š»ŃŃŽ + Accusative case + с + Instrumental case

• ŠžŃ‚ чистого серГца ŠæŠ¾Š·Š“Ń€Š°Š²Š»ŃŃŽ молоГожёнов с Гнём сŠ²Š°Š“ŃŒŠ±Ń‹! I sincerely congratulate the honeymooners on their happy wedding

If you want to congratulate a person in a very simple way, then you can simply say or write:

• Алина, с празГником! Danila, happy holiday!

2. Sometimes we congratulate the person themself, but we also want to convey congratulations to someone, for example, parents, relatives or friends, then we can say or write:

 ŠŸŠµŃ€ŠµŠ“айте мои ŠæŠ¾Š·Š“Ń€Š°Š²Š»ŠµŠ½Šøя + Š“Š°Ń‚ŠµŠ»ŃŒŠ½Ń‹Š¹ паГеж (кому?) - Send my congratulations + Dative case (to whom?)

ŠŸŠµŃ€ŠµŠ“Š°Š¹Ń‚Šµ мои ŠæŠ¾Š·Š“Ń€Š°Š²Š»ŠµŠ½Šøя вашим Ń€Š¾Š“ŠøŃ‚ŠµŠ»ŃŠ¼!] Congratulate your parents on that event/holiday.

The traditional wish on this day is «Д Гнем Ń€Š¾Š¶Š“ŠµŠ½Šøя!Ā», (Happy birthday!). Sometimes you can hear the wish «Д Гнем Š²Š°Ń€ŠµŠ½ŃŒŃ!Ā» (Happy jam day!), But usually, this phrase is used to address children or very good friends.

The main birthday wish is Ā«Š–ŠµŠ»Š°ŃŽ всего самого Š»ŃƒŃ‡ŃˆŠµŠ³Š¾/Š–ŠµŠ»Š°ŃŽ всего Š½Š°ŠøŠ»ŃƒŃ‡ŃˆŠµŠ³Š¾Ā» (I am wishing you all the best).

Another widely used birthday wish is: Ā«Š–ŠµŠ»Š°ŃŽ Š·Š“Š¾Ń€Š¾Š²ŃŒŃ, счŠ°ŃŃ‚ŃŒŃ Šø Š»ŃŽŠ±Š²ŠøĀ» (I am wishing you health, happiness, and love).

Also, the most common birthday wish is the phrase Ā«Š–ŠµŠ»Š°ŃŽ, чтобы все твои мечты сŠ±Ń‹Š»ŠøŃŃŒĀ», (I wish that all your dreams come true) или Ā«Š–ŠµŠ»Š°ŃŽ всего, чего ты сам себе желаешь» (I wish you all that you wish for yourself).

By the way, if you failed to congratulate the person on the Birthday, you can do it after, using the phrase:

Š” ŠæŃ€Š¾ŃˆŠµŠ“ŃˆŠøŠ¼ Гнём Ń€Š¾Š¶Š“ŠµŠ½Šøя! (Happy belated birthday)

How to wish someone a Happy New Year?

In Russian culture, it is customary to start congratulating you on the New Year, even before the onset of the holiday. There is even a special phrase for this:

•    Ā«Š” Š½Š°ŃŃ‚ŃƒŠæŠ°ŃŽŃ‰ŠøŠ¼! Ā». With coming New Year!

You can hear it anywhere a few days before the new year. Moreover, it is customary to speak it even to unfamiliar or completely unfamiliar people. For example, a typical situation is when a customer congratulates the store employee whilst leaving the store.

Directly on the New Year, it is customary to congratulate each other with the phrases:

•    Ā«Š” новым гоГом!Ā». ā€Ž К ŃŃ‚Š¾Š¹ фразе также часто Š“Š¾Š±Š°Š²Š»ŃŃŽŃ‚ «с новым счŠ°ŃŃ‚ŃŒŠµŠ¼Ā» (ā€œWith new happinessā€)

•    Ā«Š”частливого нового гоГа».

You can use the same phrases to reply to congratulations as in the Christmas situation.

We express our wishes sequentially according to the principle:

Personal life (family, relationships);

Society, self-realization (work, finance);

Body (appearance, health);

Soul (inner state):
