Trial lessons are modeled after my Guided Conversation sessions (*available separately), with some attention placed on grammar and pronunciation as well. These sessions are focused on developing presentation & public speaking skills for prepared and impromptu presentations, depending on the needs and interest of the learner.  Sessions are customized to learner's experience level and case-specific needs. Where applicable, we'll also address natural speech and intonation, use of idioms & storytelling devices, transitional devices, effective opening and closing techniques, key pronunciation issues, and more. Our approach can include a range of practices including: remote presentation techniques; run through or rehearsal of existing presentations in development; presentation preparation strategies; and more. The 'Guided Conversation Lesson' covers conversation skills, mainly speaking and listening, and critical thinking topics guided by learner according to their area(s) of interest. Grammar and Pronunciation issues are addressed in a basic way as well, though this is not the sole focus of the Guided Conversation lesson as I offer specialty lessons dedicated to these areas. Use of idioms, figures of speech, common expressions, and other items can be addressed as well. Note that the 'Guided Conversation' lesson differs from other lessons I offer, such as the Public Speaking and Presentation Skills lesson and other niche-specific targeted lessons.

👅 Guided Conversation with Essential Correction of Grammar and Pronunciation (Intermediate & Advanced Learners)

(This is not a conversation class, though some converation will be used in diagnostics and practice modeling. This is an Accent Reduction and pronunciation correction class, with the goal of approaching a Neutral American Accent (also called the 'Midwestern Accent'). The first sessions are dedicated to an extensive phonemic diagnostic based on students' existing natural speech, minimal pair tests, sample texts and other assessments. 

** IMPORTANT:  Please let me know before our first session what your native language is, i.e., the language you grew up speaking, even if it's not your current dominant language **

All students booking sessions with me get to benefit from my 30+ year background in broadcast and voiceover training, and my neutral Midwest [Ohio, USA] accent.

Special attention is placed on diagnosing and remedying phonetic distortion and inaccuracies which may stem from the learner's native language pronunciation and intonation patterns, previous poor training, and so forth.  All learners in my Accent Reduction sessions have different needs, depending on particular pronunciation issues, so the first session is spent diagnosing pronunciation issues, with exercises provided for home-study and practice. 

Accent reduction sessions are focused and intense, so I would suggest booking a 30 or 45 minute accent reduction/pronunciation session, followed by a more 'relaxing' one hour General Conversation or Public Speaking Session as an ideal combo.

You will read and record a special diagnostic piece of text that I send to you before the session, and I will provide instructions about recording on your phone or computer. (You will then send me the MP3, .wav, or M4A file before the session>   

During the session, we will step through the wave form of your spoken voice, zooming in to observe actual phonemic objects in the display which may indicate where  your are speaking well, and where you may be falling short. 

We'll end the session with a discussion regarding recommendations and action steps to take in order to develop your speaking voice further. 

Aside from offering real-time and delayed feedback on your actual presentation in progress, I'll also share tips and techniques from my 25+ years of broadcast and voiceover production to maximize your intonation and vocal delivery over system such as Zoom, Google Meet, Skype, and other proprietary platforms. This is especially vital when working with consumer or pro-sumer grade microphones and computer audio.

Taught journalism and fundamentals of communication at Pannasastra University, Cambodia, in their English language Communications program. Topics included marketing communications, print and broadcast journalism concepts, ethics of journalism, news writing & editing, and an overview of the role of media in society.

Designed and taught curriculum, sourced hardware, and helped establish Cambodia’s first ever University-level media production course at RUPP, Department of Media and Communications. Students produced, edited, and output a broad variety of projects in team-based production units. Course culminated in a field trip to the Bangkok International Film Festival and Market, which I produced with the cooperation of festival colleagues in Thailand.
