Class 40. Can, may, must, might — the whole modal drawer, and the one divide that decides whether you sound warm or cold.

English does modals with odd little helper verbs that refuse to conjugate. Malayalam does them with regular endings. But the real prize here is not the list — it is one distinction running down the middle of the system, and getting it wrong is how a kind person accidentally sounds cold.

ABILITY
Infinitive + an ability verb, and the subject is ALWAYS dative — because ability, like emotion, is something you have, not something you do.
എനിക്ക് ചെയ്യാൻ കഴിയും — I can do it · എനിക്ക് ചെയ്യാൻ കഴിയില്ല — I cannot.
എനിക്ക് അത് ചെയ്യാൻ പറ്റും — colloquial · അവന് ഇപ്പോൾ വരാൻ പറ്റില്ല — he can't come right now.

Two things make this easier than it looks. The past is its own short form — കഴിഞ്ഞു was able to, കഴിഞ്ഞില്ല was not able to. And present equals future: എനിക്ക് കഴിയും covers both "I can" and "I will be able to". A time word sorts it out.

Register: കഴിയും is neutral to formal. പറ്റും and പറ്റില്ല are what you actually hear in shops, kitchens and phone calls. Reach for പറ്റും in real life — and retire the stiff textbook കഴിയുവാൻ സാധ്യമല്ല. Nobody says that.

PERMISSION, OFFERS AND "LET'S" — the suffix -ആം
Its meaning shifts with the subject, and the shifts are completely regular:
ഞാൻ വരാം — I'll come (an OFFER, willingness)
എനിക്ക് വരാം — I can come (ABILITY, availability)
അവന് പോകാം — he may go (permission)
നമുക്ക് പോകാം — let's go

THE DISTINCTION ALMOST NO COURSE TEACHES
ഞാൻ വരാം is willingness. എനിക്ക് വരാം is availability. Same suffix, different case, completely different message. One is a promise; the other is a schedule check. **If a friend invites you to their wedding and you answer എനിക്ക് വരാം, you have told them your diary is free. You have not told them you are coming.**

And -ആം plus -ഒ gives ചെയ്യാമോ, the warmest everyday request in Malayalam.

#40 Can, May, Must, Might in Malayalam — The Mistake That Makes You Sound Cold

Class 37. The ചെയ്യുക engine — one verb that gives you a thousand verbs.

This is the highest-leverage hour in the whole course. Not the most beautiful. The most leveraged. Because one Malayalam verb, once you own its full conjugation, lets you say almost anything you can say in English.

WHY IT WORKS
Spoken Malayalam freely absorbs English verbs — but an English verb cannot take Malayalam endings. You cannot conjugate "tried". So the language parks the English word in front of ചെയ്യുക and lets ചെയ്യുക carry every scrap of the grammar.
ഞാൻ ട്രൈ ചെയ്തു — I tried · അവൻ കോൾ ചെയ്യും — he will call · നീ ചെക്ക് ചെയ്തോ? — did you check? · ഞങ്ങൾ ഹെൽപ്പ് ചെയ്യാം — we'll help.

THE SWAP RULE — WHERE THE LEVERAGE COMES FROM
Whatever works for try ചെയ്തു works for call, check, drive, open, book, download, cancel, forward, upload. Master ONE set of endings. Gain a thousand verbs.

And this is not broken Malayalam. Native speakers use these hybrids constantly. The only place to dial it down is an exam or a formal document.

TWO STEMS, AND A SPELLING TRAP
Present stem ചെയ്യ് builds present, future, commands, modals. Past stem ചെയ്ത് builds past, perfects and sequence links. The present has the DOUBLE y; the past has a single y. ചെയ്യുന്നു but ചെയ്തു. Never cheyythu.

THE THREE CORE TENSES
ചെയ്തു did / ചെയ്തില്ല didn't · ചെയ്യുന്നു does / ചെയ്യുന്നില്ല isn't doing · ചെയ്യും will / ചെയ്യില്ല won't.
Plus the emphatic right-now ചെയ്യുകയാണ്, and the past continuous ചെയ്യുകയായിരുന്നു.

THE GIFT NOBODY POINTS OUT CLEARLY ENOUGH
The verb never changes for person or number. ഞാൻ, നീ, അവൻ, അവൾ, നമ്മൾ, അവർ — identical form for every subject. Compare the six forms a Spanish or French learner memorises for every tense of every verb, then multiply across the irregulars, and you will appreciate what Malayalam is not asking of you.

#37 The Cheyyuka Engine — One Malayalam Verb That Unlocks a Thousand

Class 36. Saying no — six different ways Malayalam says "was not", and why English is the strange one.

That sentence sounds absurd the first time you hear it. Six ways to say "was not", all of them used, and using the wrong one is immediately audible. But flip it around: the real oddity here is English.

WHY ENGLISH IS THE WEIRD ONE
English has one massively overloaded verb, "to be", doing at least three different jobs. It links a subject to an identity (he is a doctor). It states that something exists (there is a problem). In some languages it even handles possession. English piles all that onto one word and lets context sort it out.

Malayalam refuses. Identity is ആണ്. Existence and possession are ഉണ്ട്. Two separate lineages, each of which can be pushed into the past independently. Add action verbs on top and you arrive naturally at several distinct forms of "was not". They are not redundant duplicates — they are the honest consequence of a language that keeps its concepts apart.

THE ONE QUESTION THAT KEEPS THEM STRAIGHT
Ask every time: what am I actually denying — an identity, a presence, a possession, or an action?

1. ആയിരുന്നില്ല (aayirunnilla) — was not, of identity or description. അവൻ ഡോക്ടർ ആയിരുന്നില്ല — he was not a doctor.
2. ഇല്ലായിരുന്നു (illaayirunnu) — was absent, did not exist. ആ കാലത്തു മൊബൈൽ ഫോൺ ഇല്ലായിരുന്നു — in those days mobile phones did not exist.
3. ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല (undaayirunnilla) — did not have. എനിക്ക് പൈസ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല — I did not have money.
4. Past stem + ഇല്ല, for actions. ഞാൻ പറഞ്ഞില്ല · അവൻ വന്നില്ല · അവൾ പോയില്ല.

THE RULE THAT SAVES YOU
Attach ഇല്ല to the PAST stem, never the present. പറഞ്ഞു + ഇല്ല fuses to പറഞ്ഞില്ല. Build it from the present stem and you produce a non-word. The past marker must be INSIDE the negative, not outside it.

And action verbs never borrow the other three systems. They have their own lane.

#36 Six Ways to Say "Was Not" in Malayalam — and Why English Is the Odd One Out

Class 24. Chaining verbs like a native — one subject at the front, one tense at the back, and a whole morning in a single sentence.

Listen to two Malayalis describe their morning. You will not hear six tidy sentences. You will hear one long ribbon of verbs, and only the very last verb carries any tense at all:

ഞാൻ കുളിച്ചു, മുഖം കഴുകി, പല്ല് തേച്ചു, ഉടുപ്പ് ഇട്ടു, ഇപ്പോ കഴിക്കാം
(njaan kulichu, mukham kazhuki, pallu theychu, uduppu ittu, ippo kazhikkaam)
I bathed, washed my face, brushed my teeth, got dressed, and now we can eat.

To an English ear that is a run-on. To a Malayalam ear it is one perfectly formed sentence — and it is the single biggest structural difference between beginner Malayalam and fluent Malayalam.

THE WORKHORSE
-ഇട്ട് (-ittu) on the past stem: "having done this, clearing the way for the next".
കഴിച്ചിട്ട് പോകാം (kazhichittu pokaam) let's go after eating.
The pattern scales to any length: action + ittu, action + ittu, then ONE final verb carrying the tense for everything.

THE COMPRESSION THAT MAKES IT SOUND REAL
In fast speech the -ittu tail simply drops, leaving the bare past form. Meaning identical, only formality changes. കുളിച്ചിട്ട് becomes കുളിച്ചു · കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ട് becomes കഴിഞ്ഞു · വന്നിട്ട് becomes വന്നു.

THREE NATIVE HABITS, EACH FIXING A BEGINNER ERROR
1. Drop the subject after the first mention. Beginners repeat ഞാൻ before every verb because English forces them to. Say it four times and you sound like a machine.
2. Use -ഉം for PARALLEL actions, not -ittu. Sequence chains with ittu; a bundle links with um.
3. Save the payoff verb for the end. The listener is waiting for that last word — do not waste it.

ASPECT LAYERING
ചെയ്തിട്ടില്ല (cheythittilla) — "hasn't been done YET". English needs a separate word for "yet". Malayalam builds it into the ending.

#24 Chain Verbs Like a Native — Describe a Whole Morning in One Malayalam Sentence

Class 23. Connecting ideas — sixteen small endings that turn one-idea sentences into real conversation.

Up to now you have built single thoughts. I want tea. He came. It rained. That is honest beginner's work, but nobody talks like that. Real speech links: if they come I'll eat; when he arrives call me; even if you don't come, I'm going.

THE MASTER RULE — LEARN THIS AND THE REST IS VOCABULARY
English joins ideas with separate words in FRONT of a clause: if, when, because. Malayalam attaches a SUFFIX to the end of the first verb, and the second verb carries the tense for the whole sentence.

അവർ വന്നാൽ ഞാൻ കഴിക്കും (avar vannaal njaan kazhikkum) — If they come, I will eat.
Look at where the work happens. വന്നാൽ carries the "if". കഴിക്കും carries the future. The first verb has no tense of its own at all — it surrendered its tense to the end of the sentence and took a connector in exchange.

FAMILY 1 — CONDITION
• -ആൽ = if, on the PAST stem. വന്നാൽ, never വരുമാൽ. Never put a future stem inside a condition.
• ഇല്ലേൽ (illel) = if not. The written form is ഇല്ലെങ്കിൽ, but conversation almost always squeezes it to illel. നീ പോയില്ലേൽ ഞാൻ വരില്ല.
• -ആലും = EVEN if. മഴ പെയ്താലും ഞാൻ പോകും — even if it rains, I will go.

Keep the pairs straight, because they are not interchangeable. ആൽ and ഇല്ലേൽ are real conditions — one waits to see. ആലും and ഇല്ലെങ്കിലും are concessions — the speaker has already decided.

FAMILY 2 — TIME
• -ഉമ്പോൾ = when / while. Take the future വരും, drop the -um, add -umbol: വരുമ്പോൾ. Never വരുമുമ്പോൾ.
• -അപ്പോൾ on the past stem for a specific past moment: ടീച്ചർ വന്നപ്പോൾ ക്ലാസ് സൈലന്റ് ആയി.
• "Before" is the one that catches everyone — it needs the verbal noun, not a plain stem.
