En el mundo hay 21 países que tienen como lengua oficial el español: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, España, Guatemala, Guinea Ecuatorial, Honduras, México, Nicaragua, Panamá, Uruguay, Perú, Puerto Rico, República Dominicana, Uruguay y Venezuela. Además, en Estados Unidos, el español es un idioma muy importante porque en este país está la segunda comunidad de hispanohablantes más grande del mundo, después de México. También en el Sáhara Occidental (noroeste de África) se habla algo de español, ya que esta zona hubo presencia española  hasta 1976. Y otro dato curioso es que, aunque Estados Unidos y Filipinas no tienen como lengua oficial el español, sí forman parte de la Asociación de Academias de Español.
